Restylane

Restylane is an injectable gel filler that’s ideal for filling fine lines and deeper wrinkles, creating a smoother, more youthful appearance. Restylane also restores volume and structure–particularly in the cheekbones and lips–which we tend to lose as we age. The process is quick, and the results are immediate. Restylane is especially effective in treating the most common age-related facial issues, such as:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Forehead lines and furrows
  • Marionette lines around the mouth
  • Thinning earlobes
  • Thinning lips
  • Hollowness under the eyes
  • Scar repair

Restylane injections can also create a lifting effect for the cheekbones. For the best, most natural results, patients need a highly skilled facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon to inject fillers in precise locations.

Ideal Candidates

You may be an ideal candidate for Restylane and fillers if you have any of the age-related symptoms listed above and would like to regain a more youthful appearance. As with all medical procedures, excellent candidates are those in good overall health and who have informed, realistic expectations.

Preparation

An initial consultation with Dr. Minton is the first step to any procedure. There he will discuss your health history. Medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen should be avoided as they can increase the likelihood of bruising.

The Injection Procedure

The procedure for Restylane is fairly simple and relatively painless. Dr. Minton uses a very thin needle to inject Restylane into the targeted areas. The number of injections depends on the intensity of the wrinkles, your facial features, and desired results—all of which Dr. Minton will cover in the initial consultation. Some injection sites are more sensitive than others, but Dr. Minton may anesthetize the area before injection to help alleviate any minor discomfort.

After The Procedure

There is no downtime with a Restylane treatment. You can get back to your normal activities almost immediately, though there may be some initial redness for a few minutes. Temporary bruising may occur, but applying ice packs tends to help. Bruising and any swelling will disappear within a few hours or just a few days. You will begin to see results immediately. Restylane will last for 4 to 9 months on average.

Frequently Asked Questions

Restylane is an injectable gel fill comprised of hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring substance in our bodies. The gel itself lifts the skin and the hyaluronic acid draws water to the skin, creating a fuller, more youthful appearance.

Both Restylane and Juvederm are injectable gels comprised of hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring substance in our bodies. Hyaluronic acid adds hydration and volume to our skin. Whereas Juvederm has a smooth consistency, Restylane gel is more granular. The jury is still out as to which filler lasts longer. Dr. Minton will discuss which injectable is right for you.

Both Restylane and Botox are injectables that improve the look of wrinkles. Whereas Botox relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkling, Restylane fills in the areas, creating a more natural plumpness. A liquid face lift is when a combination of injectables, such as Botox and Restylane, are used together to fill wrinkles and soften the muscles that cause wrinkles. Dr. Minton can recommend which treatment is right for you to best achieve the results you want.

Restylane is a very safe treatment with very few risks or complications. However, it should not be used on women who are pregnant or nursing. Restylane should not be used with some medications, which is why it’s important to give Dr. Minton information about any and all medications you are taking.

After the initial consultation, a Restylane treatment only takes about 15 minutes.

Fillers are is injected using a very fine needle, so while there is some initial discomfort–like a sting–it’s brief. Dr. Minton can use ice or a topical anesthesia to help ease any discomfort.

The effects of Restylane are temporary, but they will generally last 4 to 9 months. Dr. Minton may recommend a follow-up treatment to prolong the effects.

Sometimes “touch-up” injections are needed to get the best results. If you aren’t 100% satisfied with the procedure, Dr. Minton encourages you to call Savannah Facial Plastic Surgery to schedule a follow-up visit.

Unlike surgery, the effects of Restylane are not permanent, so it is not considered an alternative to surgery, but Restylane can prolong the need for surgery. Additionally, it can be used as a way to “preview” the results of more permanent procedures.
