Preparation: An initial consultation is the first step in any procedure. There we will discuss your health history. Medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen should be avoided as they can increase the likelihood of bruising.
The Injection Procedure: The procedure for Juvederm is fairly simple and relatively painless. We use a very thin needle to inject Juvederm into the targeted areas. The number of injections depends on the intensity of the wrinkles, your facial features, and desired results—all of which we will cover in the initial consultation.
Some injection sites are more sensitive than others, but we may anesthetize the area before injection to help alleviate any minor discomfort.

You can get back to your normal activities almost immediately, though there may be some initial redness for a few minutes. Temporary bruising may occur, but applying ice packs tends to help. Both Juvederm and Botox are injectables that improve the look of wrinkles. They’re also both produced by the same company, Allergan. Whereas Botox relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkling, Juvederm fills in the areas, creating a more natural plumpness. Your aesthetic specialist can recommend which injectable is right for you to best achieve your desired results.
There are specific formulations of Juvederm in order to tailor the treatment to a patient’s unique needs. For instance, Juvederm Ultra uses a thinner gel to treat fine lines and wrinkles, whereas Juvederm Ultra Plus uses a thicker gel ideal for plumping and treating deeper lines and wrinkles. Juvederm Voluma restores volume when injected into the cheek area. We can assess which treatment is right for your needs.
Juvederm is a very safe treatment with very few risks or complications. However, it should not be used on women who are pregnant or nursing. Juvederm should not be used with some medications, which is why it’s important to give us information about any and all medications you are taking.
After the initial consultation, a Juvederm treatment only takes about 15 minutes.
Will it hurt?Juvederm is injected using a very fine needle, so while there is some initial discomfort–like a sting–it’s brief. We can use ice or a topical anesthesia to help ease any discomfort.
The effects of Juvederm are temporary, but they will generally last 6 to 9 months. We may recommend a follow-up treatment to prolong the effects.

Unlike surgery, the effects of Juvederm are not permanent, so it is not considered an alternative to surgery, but Juvederm can prolong the need for surgery. Additionally, it can be used as a way to “preview” the results of more permanent procedures.
