What Do You Save For

When vacations are on hold and Zoom is king, it might be time for a little well-earned maintenance

It’s true. No one needs Botox during a pandemic. I also don’t need makeup or cute but uncomfortable shoes. Hell, I don’t even need a bra (though my teenage daughter takes issue with this). But that doesn’t mean I can’t look to the near future where Botox and makeup and cute shoes (hopefully) will make a return.

The bra? Nah.

I am not alone in my thinking. Some people who once saved for vacations by plane or cruise (eek!) are putting their savings elsewhere. New car? New wardrobe (minus the bra)? A Gold’s Gym worth of workout equipment? And thanks to the fact that we’re living in a virtual hall of mirrors because of FaceTime, Zoom and the like, let’s put some cosmetic procedures on that list.

I don’t need it right now. No one sees me and my people who do already know the truth and those who only know me virtually, well, there are filters for that. But once life returns to some semblance of normal, those once-filtered videos are going to create a lot of, “Huh, really? That’s you?” in my future.

Now is the best time to get said procedures. A little BotoxFaceTiteMopheus 8 here or there, because all I’ve got in my immediate future in downtime. But if I can’t do it right now, I can at least save for it. I’ve already saved about $1K on the fact that my daughter’s travelling volleyball club is shut down for the season and I haven’t eaten out for weeks. So how about a little “me” time when the time is right? When “me” needs it most?

It may seem shallow, but I encourage you to look closer. Yes, close enough to see those crows’ feet and smile lines. It’s not the end of the world. It’s not even essential. But my mom wasn’t wrong: When I look good, I feel good. Eventually I want to put on the uncomfortable shoes and the makeup. I yearn for it. I yearn to make myself feel like myself again.

The bra might be optional. But turning back the clock about ten years? Yes, please. And you know what? After home-schooling, isolating, and wiping every square inch with disinfectant for months, I deserve this.
