Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment to destroy damaged cells on the surface of the skin. PDT involves the topical application of a photosynthesizing drug, in which a light source is then passed over to activate the drug, destroying targeted cells without damaging other parts of the skin.

The Photodynamic Therapy Procedure

The procedure for photodynamic therapy is fairly simple with little to moderate discomfort. After the skin is thoroughly cleaned, a topical drug is applied to the targeted area. Then Dr. Minton passes a light source over the area to create a photochemical reaction that activates the drug. A laser is often used to treat smaller areas, whereas a non-laser can treat larger surfaces. The photochemical reaction causes a reaction similar to a sunburn, killing the damaged cells.

After The Procedure

After the photodynamic treatment, Dr. Minton dresses the area. The recovery depends on the strength of the photosynthesizing drug used and the size of the area treated, but it can range anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks. Patients may experience photosensitivity, itching, burning, swelling, and peeling after the treatment. Any discomfort can be alleviated with mild pain medication. It’s important to protect the treated area from sun exposure for several months. An additional treatment is sometimes necessary and is usually administered 7 to 10 days later.
