Microneedling, or collagen induction therapy, now available at Savannah Facial Plastic Surgery
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally-invasive procedure to rejuvenate the skin, improving firmness and texture. The process involves a micropen tipped with cluster of fine needles, which is passed over the face, creating hundreds of imperceptible micro punctures in the top layer of the skin. This triggers the body to naturally create new collagen and elastin for a fresher, more youthful appearance.
Microneedling may also be combined with topical treatments such as PRP (platelet rich plasma) or another vitamin-rich serum.
Microneedling is effective in treating a wide variety of skin issues, including:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Enlarged pores
- Stretch marks
- Loose skin
- Skin damaged by sun
- Scars from chickenpox/acne
- Enlarged pores
You may be an ideal candidate for microneedling if you have any of the issues listed above and are interested in treating these skin irregularities with an effective non-surgical treatment. Microneedling can be performed anywhere on the face, scalp, neck and body, and can treat all types of skin. As with all medical procedures, excellent candidates are those in good overall health and who have informed, realistic expectations.
An initial consultation with Dr. Minton is the first step to any procedure. There he will discuss your health history. Medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen should be avoided as they can prevent blood clotting.
THE MICRONEEDLING PROCEDURE
To prepare your skin for microneedling, your skin will be thoroughly washed and a topical anesthetic may be applied to alleviate any discomfort. Then Dr. Minton will use a pen-like device tipped with hundreds of micro needles to create tiny punctures on the top layer of skin. (The micropen can be adjusted for speed and depth of penetration, depending on the area being treated.)
AFTER YOUR MICRONEEDLING TREATMENT
After the microneedling treatment, Dr. Minton will apply platelet rich plasma or another vitamin-rich serum to be absorbed into the skin. You will experience redness and swelling similar to a sunburn that will last 24 to 48 hours. There may be minimal pinpoint bruising.
Within a week of the treatment, your skin will appear smoother and more radiant, but the results will continue to improve over the course of a few months.
Dr. Minton will recommend the right protective skin care products to use after the procedure.
How does microneedling actually work?
By creating tiny punctures on the skin’s surface, microneedling stimulates the body to produce new collagen and elastin. This creates a more plump and rejuvenated appears. It also leaves behind smoother skin with more even coloring.
Is microneedling safe?
Microneedling is a very safe, minimally invasive treatment that requires no downtime.
How long does a microneedling treatment take?
The treatment itself can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour depending on the size of the treated area.
Will it hurt?
Though microneedling causes minimal discomfort, Dr. Minton may apply a topical anesthetic to make the procedure entirely pain free.
Is microneedling a good alternative to surgery?
Like surgery, the effects of microneedling are permanent, though it is less likely to provide the dramatic results surgery can. However, microneedling can be used as a way to “preview” the results of more permanent procedures such as a facelift, scar revision or even a chemical peel.
